Frequently asked questions

What if I forget the password?

The file can’t be opened without it, and we can’t recover it: the password isn’t sent or stored anywhere. Keep the original file or save the password in a password manager.

Which apps can open the protected file?

Any modern PDF viewer: Adobe Acrobat Reader, web browsers, Preview on Mac and mobile apps. Very old programs without AES-256 support may fail to open it.

Is it free?

Yes. All tools are free, with no sign-up and no watermarks.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device.
